Healthy Food for Your Dogs

During the terrible pet food scare a couple of years ago where many pets lost their lives due to contaminated ingredients in commercial pet food, I started looking for a healthier and safer alternative.

Many years ago I worked for a veterinarian and firmly believed that if I fed a big name brand pet food that there would be enough quality control to insure that my pet was getting the right nutrition.  Never did I think that some of these commercial foods would actually shorten my pet's life or cause a deterioration in their health.

As many of you remember, there were several "high quality" foods that were put on the contaminated list.  It was a scary time for all pet owners and many of us continue to wonder if something else might be found in the commercial food that we are now feeding our pets.

After much research and soul searching, I decided to feed my pets a natural diet.  It is a bit more work but it has given me peace of mind knowing that there are no potential chemicals in the food that can cause them harm.

To start the natural diet, I searched through the internet but didn't really find any usable recipes for a beginner like me so I then searched the ebooks.  To help save you time, I'm including links for some ebooks that have great meal recipes and recipes for treats too.

Click on any of the links below to read about the books and find the one that's right for you.

If your pet suffers from skin problems, it could be food related.  Feeding a natural diet does not expose them to all the chemicals and preservatives put in commercial food to give it a longer shelf life and artificial taste.

Many times through my adult life, I thought about my grandparents dogs and how they were fed.  Their dogs and cats were rarely ever given "store bought" food.  Everyday all the scraps that were left from our meals were put in a big bowl and taken out to the pets for them to eat.  I always wondered why those pets didn't seem to have all the health problems today's pets do since they didn't have the "advantage" of the commercial food that most people now feed.  Now I realize that my grandparents were doing the best thing for their pets by feeding the table scraps.  Their diet was by no means balanced since they only fed them what was left over but at least it did not contain anything harmful.  By ordering any of the ebooks listed above, you will find foods you eat that are also healthy for your dogs and the recipes to make balanced meals for them.

Feeding a natural diet may take a little more time than pouring some dry food or opening a can of food but our pets are worth it!!!!!  A natural diet usually costs less than feeding commercial food and gives you tremendous peace of mind.  Also, my pets used to be finicky about their food but now get so excited about meal time!!!!  I never have to coax them to eat or wind up throwing any of their meal away!
